A course incorporating spoken, and written English skills in association with computing skills.

THE1-1102 University foundation course 2

A course on ‘Introduction to university learning’ introducing students to skills in self-directed learning and basic critical evaluative approach to study

THE2-1103 Bible Introduction 1 - Old Testament

THE2-1104 Bible Introduction 2 - New Testament

These units help the student  to gain an overview of the whole of the Bible by reading each book and identifying its structure, purpose, and main theological themes. It prepares them for further study of the Bible and work in all other theological disciplines.

THE3-1205 Spiritual Formation            (˝ course)

This unit provides an introduction to the theological foundations and disciplined practice of the spiritual life. The lifelong process of understanding and habituating the disciplines of Christian discipleship helps to provide a basis and framework for the pastoral ministry.

The content for this unit will include:

  • the nature of spirituality and its importance for the student of theology
  • characteristic features of a Lutheran spirituality
  • biblical insights into a genuine spirituality
  • the nature and practice of spiritual disciplines (eg prayer, meditation, worship)
  • understanding one’s vocation in the world


THE3-1206  Introduction to worship (˝ course)

This unit introduces students to the Biblical and theological foundations for the enactment of the divine service in the church.  As an introductory unit it concentrates on the teaching and practice of the New Testament and the Early Church to help them to appreciate the centrality of worship to the life of the church and the study of theology.

 

THE4-1207 Lutheran Theological Foundations 

(Martin Luther’s Small Catechism)

This unit focuses extensively on the use of Luther’s Small Catechism, the basic doctrinal and catechetical tool of the Lutheran Church. Students gain a thorough working knowledge of this basic Lutheran text for their own life and prayer, and as a foundation for all doctrine and teaching in their subsequent studies and in their ministry.

THE3-1208 Introduction to Christian Education / Teaching

This unit provides the opportunity for students to begin to develop an understanding of the process of education through the life span and also to develop skills in the preparation of teaching and learning experiences for the parish context.  This unit relates closely to the field education component of the course which provides experience in various educational situations in order to prepare students for their future role as teachers in the parish setting

 

THE4-1209 Church History 1 (Early and Medieval Church History)           

The purpose of this unit is to enable students to gain knowledge and understanding of the church’s historical development in theology, structure, worship, and mission from Pentecost through to the late medieval period (AD 1400), and to reflect on the significance of this history for the present situation of the church.
