THE2-2101 Greek 1

The purpose of this unit is that students may be introduced to the basic vocabulary, grammar and syntax of biblical Greek.

THE2-2102 Greek 2

The purpose of this unit is that students may build on the learning achieved in Greek 1 and become more proficient in the vocabulary, grammar and syntax of biblical Greek.

THE3-2103 Worship / Liturgics

This unit is designed for pastors and other people responsible for the design and practice of worship in the Lutheran Church of Australia. It trains them to lead Lutheran congregations in the communion service and in other worship services.

THE2-2104 New Testament Environment / Background  (½ course)

This unit provides students with the opportunity to explore the political, social, cultural, and religious setting of Jesus’ ministry and of the early church as it spread into the Greco-Roman world. Reading the New Testament writings in their own context provides the necessary background to interpreting the gospel in our own context.

THE4-2105 Hermeneutics (½ course )

This unit seeks to introduce students to the principles and practice of the discipline known as hermeneutics, to demonstrate a Lutheran approach to reading the Bible, to provide opportunity for students to study and evaluate current hermeneutical theories, and to initiate the process of developing their own biblical hermeneutics and their own exegetical method.

THE2-2206 Old Testament Exegesis 1 (Pentateuch)

The unit examines the theological themes and literary composition of Genesis and Exodus, paying attention to New Testament connections and contemporary application.  The course will cover the following areas:

  • The contents of Genesis and Exodus.
  • Principal themes of the Pentateuch.
  • History of Pentateuchal interpretation.
  • Practice in the art of exegesis, using several texts as models.
  • Drawing from the text applications for church and society today.

THE4-2207 Ecumenical and Apologetic Theology / Churches and Sects

The main focus of this unit is to introduce students to the teachings and practices of church groups (Christian denominations) in PNG and their historical roots and organization as well as the teachings of those new religious groups in PNG whose teachings oppose many of the common core beliefs held by the denominations of Christianity; and their historical roots and formation.

THE2-2208 New Testament Exegesis 1 (Synoptic Gospels and Acts)

Students explore the history of the gospel tradition and the origin of the Synoptic Gospels and explore sections of the Synoptics and Acts. Studies in the core message of John the Baptist, of Jesus, and of the early church in Acts, will help to provide further basis for systematic and pastoral studies, especially preaching.

THE4-2209 Church History 2 (Reform of the church)

The purpose of this unit is to involve students in the history of the Reformation era so that they may better understand the church of today, and the Lutheran tradition in particular as a movement for evangelical reform within the church catholic.
