THE2-2101 Greek 1
The purpose of this unit is that students
may be introduced to the basic vocabulary, grammar and syntax of biblical
Greek.
THE2-2102 Greek 2
The purpose of this unit is that students
may build on the learning achieved in Greek 1 and become more proficient in the
vocabulary, grammar and syntax of biblical Greek.
THE3-2103 Worship / Liturgics
This unit is designed for pastors and other
people responsible for the design and practice of worship in the Lutheran
Church of Australia. It trains them to lead Lutheran congregations in the
communion service and in other worship services.
THE2-2104 New Testament Environment / Background (½ course)
This unit provides students with the
opportunity to explore the political, social, cultural, and religious setting
of Jesus’ ministry and of the early church as it spread into the Greco-Roman
world. Reading the New Testament writings in their own context provides the
necessary background to interpreting the gospel in our own context.
THE4-2105 Hermeneutics (½ course )
This unit seeks to introduce students to
the principles and practice of the discipline known as hermeneutics, to demonstrate
a Lutheran approach to reading the Bible, to provide opportunity for students
to study and evaluate current hermeneutical theories, and to initiate the
process of developing their own biblical hermeneutics and their own exegetical
method.
THE2-2206 Old Testament Exegesis 1 (Pentateuch)
The unit examines the theological themes
and literary composition of Genesis and Exodus, paying attention to New
Testament connections and contemporary application. The course will cover the following areas:
- The
contents of Genesis and Exodus.
- Principal
themes of the Pentateuch.
- History
of Pentateuchal interpretation.
- Practice
in the art of exegesis, using several texts as models.
- Drawing
from the text applications for church and society today.
THE4-2207 Ecumenical and Apologetic Theology / Churches and
Sects
The main focus of this unit is to introduce
students to the teachings and practices of church groups (Christian
denominations) in PNG and their historical roots and organization as well as
the teachings of those new religious groups in PNG whose teachings oppose many
of the common core beliefs held by the denominations of Christianity; and their
historical roots and formation.
THE2-2208 New Testament Exegesis 1 (Synoptic Gospels and
Acts)
Students explore the history of the gospel
tradition and the origin of the Synoptic Gospels and explore sections of the
Synoptics and Acts. Studies in the core message of John the Baptist, of Jesus,
and of the early church in Acts, will help to provide further basis for
systematic and pastoral studies, especially preaching.
THE4-2209 Church History 2 (Reform of the church)
The purpose of this unit is to involve
students in the history of the Reformation era so that they may better
understand the church of today, and the Lutheran tradition in particular as a
movement for evangelical reform within the church catholic.
