THE3-6101 Administration and leadership for ministry

On completion of the unit students will have had an opportunity to:

  • appreciate those understandings
  • attitudes and skills needed to administer a congregation.

THE3-6102 Pastoral Care and Counselling

The purpose of this unit is to build on the basic counselling theory and practice which students have undertaken in previous units, and in their field work.

THE3-6103 Formula of Concord

This unit studies the doctrinal content of The Formula of Concord in the context of its historical and theological setting, examines the church’s and the individual student’s present-day commitment to it, and therefore its place in the life, confession and worship of the Church.

The unit evaluates the place of Confessions in the life of the Church today and the confessional and pastoral responsibilities associated with being a pastor of the Lutheran.  The ecumenical value of the Lutheran Confessions is discussed with a special focus on the abiding value of the Formula of Concord. The historical background, content and contemporary pastoral relevance of each of the twelve articles of the Formula is discussed.

THE3-6205 Church in Mission in Papua New Guinea Society

The course aim is to help students develop an ability to lead the Lutheran church in mission in the context of PNG Society. To fulfill this aim the unit provides learning experiences for the student in the basic areas of cultural sensitivity and pastoral ministry. This assists in equipping him with the understandings, attitudes and skills needed to serve as the Pastor of a congregation and in the context of the Lutheran Church of PNG, in the contemporary social and cultural setting.

The unit examines the uses and limitations of sociology / anthropology for understanding the society in which we live, highlights the major characteristics of Melanesian society.  In addition the unit reflects on the nature and mission of the church from a Lutheran perspective and begins to explore bridges and barriers for proclaiming the Gospel in today's world.
